Lappy failure

My laptop is having issues, so I was forced to move all my work onto the web, which in the grand scheme of things, is probably better.

So I forwarded all my inbox to gmail, expanded the wiki, and will be trying to use backpack.it more extensively. I’ll also try to move my bookmarks online, as well as use a master password.

Initial inventory

This coming weeks’ goal is to seed the inventory. We will strive to get a sizeable inventory by the end of it, so that starting next week we can start getting new users to exchange items.

We will try to gain access to the 100+ DVDs, many console games and hopefully a fair amount of CDs.

Fixed those darn bugs

We might have stopped working early yesterday out of frustration, but our minds did not follow ; we fixed yesterdays bugs in no time, and so both the proposals and profile now perfectly work.

Bug fixing

Today we made a lot of bug fixing, or at least tried: we made an attempt at fixing the lack of stars on the proposals page, only to run into a much bigger problem, due to the sites split between peerswop and swophit.

At the same time, we tried to tackle another problem, that the images obtained from Audioscrobbler were no longer inserted into our database, but in the end, didn’t manage to do both before the eend of the day.

Audioscrobbler

Audioscrobbler added images for each artist, so we now use that service to recognise the users’ input for their profiles, so it comes up with a nice little artist or band image. On top of that, the problems encountered when previously using Amazon (thru first album recognition) have as expected disappeared.

French accents and translation

We continued with the translation to French (along with adapting the source code to reflect different syntaxes) since there were major accent issues in the titles of our auto-emails.We more or less made a quick fix, we’ll make a greater inspection when the more important things are done.

Screencast

We have been working on a Screencast today, to show first users how the system works, but we didn’t go far as there were abnormal problems loading images from Amazon. The origins of the failure are still unknown (the images were not loaded in some browsers -namely Firefox- under some conditions -when adding inventory- though they did load under linux).

So we tried making a first Screencast to get a feel for how it works, and we’ll try tomorrow to make the real one and Flash-edit it.We’ll have to wait for voice because 1) We need a nice female voice, 2) our Windows computer has microphone issues.

First feedback

Today, after having fixed a bug in which not all platforms for video games were inserted into the database and where only two actors appeared for movies, we got our first feedback for the site.

Apparently, one of the first links one clicks on is How it works (not surprising). We absolutely need to put something there, be it a screencast or some instructions. We will try to get something done as fast as possible, and its priority has been moved to Urgent on the Wiki.

On a second note we looked into allowing ESC Lille students the possibility of bypassing the invitation only process, but it appears to be fairly elaborate.

Deadline

Hurray ! Our deadline has been reached and all major bugs were fixed on time, so we may now start focusing on getting actual users.

The English emails sent thru proposals.php were fixed this morning, the menus were changed to focus on getting stuff, the wiki todo list was updated, including adding new bugs (triste) and features.

We will have to wait a bit before we know if we have access to the many DVDs, too.

Last fixes

Some bugs in the remote panel were fixed, which allows for some automated routine database tasks.

The ability to change your email address and give your real name were added to the Swophit Usage page, so only the possibility of changing ones’ password remains.

We also called up to see if we could gain access to the 200+ DVDs, and it looks like it is possible, which is good news.

The Swophit Usage page was completed with transaction histories of games, music and dvds, and the address and personal information part separated to another page.

Finally, the invitation page was translated and the font size bug fixed; some sentences were made clearer; and we tested the CDs and games sections, carefully editing our wiki to include all the problems to fix and features to add.
